Poker chip purchase guide

There are dozens, even hundreds of different types and models of poker chip made across the world, with an equally vast variation in quality. The poker chips made by Pokchips are named according to the material used, i.e. ABS, PP, ABS-PP, CLAY, CLAY composite, Ceramic, etc.

This guide explains the different models of poker chip available at Pokchips.com, what they are made from and how, and their special features.

ABS poker chips:

The metal insert in the ABS poker chips gives them their distinctive crisp, metallic sound. The understated gloss finish, manufacturing process and materials make it practically indestructible.

Manufacturing process:

ABS : Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, a widely used plastic found in a vast range of manufacturing applications, including Lego bricks. It is delivered as pellets prior to processing. Different-coloured pellets are used for each colour in the poker chips.

A metal insert that determines the weight and structure of the chip.

To make the ABS chips, a series of different-coloured ABS materials are injection moulded into a chip-shaped mould that contains the metal inserts. Each colour requires a separate step in the manufacturing process.

ABS-PP poker chips:

ABS-PP chips produce a sound somewhere between an ABS chip and a clay chip. They sound less crisp and have less of a metallic ring than standard ABS chips, but have more of a sheen than clay chips. ABS-PP chips look sleeker and are shinier than standard ABS chips. The substance used has a rougher texture than straightforward ABS, making it a suitable surface for applying inlay stickers.

Manufacturing process:

ABS-PP chips are manufactured in almost exactly the same way as standard ABS chips, except that polypropylene is also used. Polypropylene is tough, rigid and abrasion-resistant, and is used to make a wide variety of everyday plastic items such as car dashboards.

Clay Composite chips:

Clay composite chips are made in a similar way to ABS chips. They include a metal slug to bring their weight up to between 11.5 and 14 grams. However, they have a very distinctive feel and sound compared to ABS and PP chips, feeling much like casino chips made by Bourgogne or Grasset, and less resonant than conventional chips. Their extra weight makes them more pleasant in the hand and therefore more pleasant at the table.

Full Clay chips:

Full Clay chips do not have a metal insert. This gives them a resonance that seasoned poker players will appreciate. They also have a coarser texture compared to Clay Composites. However, there are in fact no 100% clay chips on the market, as the properties of clay makes them too brittle and too costly to produce. For this reason, Full Clay chips are made from an alloy of various materials combined with a significant proportion of real clay (approx. 90%).

Ceramic chips:

Ceramic poker chips are custom produced using the sublimation method, which heats the inks to 200°C and then lays them on to the blank chips through printing heads. The inks dry on contact with the surface of the chip.

All our chips are manufactured to the highest quality. The 39 mm chips weigh 10 g; the 43 mm version weighs 12 g.

Our ceramic chips start out as blanks. Customers choose their own design that they want printed or they can select an exiting model.

There are two different surface feels for ceramic chips:

"Textured":
Covered with very tiny bumps only a few microns in size that make the ceramic chip a lot rougher to the touch.

"Smooth":
Look muted yet sleek, but adhere to the cloth despite not being rough like the textured chips.

You can select the texture of your choice for your ceramic poker chips from the custom design module.

Ceramic dealer buttons and plaques all have the smooth surface texture.
